The Vatican

When I go to Rome I usually go to the Vatican as it never gets old. SOmeimes I am lucky enough to be there for Vespers ( prayers) in which many of the Cardinals will be in attendence or a Mass itself. One of the many auxilliary altars in St. Peter's
St. Peter's Altar- only the Holy Father -the Pope is permitted to say Mass at this altar.
Below this altar are the remains of St. Peter

Pope John XXIII's remains are below this glass casket with his likeness and actual robes. Pope John XXIII was beatified and therefore lies in rotunda of St. Peter's

Michaelango's famous stature "The Pietaa". This is sculpted from a single slab of marble. It has onyl left the CVatican once and that was to be a part of the Italian Exhibit at the World's Fair in NY in the 1960's. The statue now behind glass and some years ago someone tried to attack the statue and damaged one of Mary's fingers
